I'm guessing the former was a lot more fun.

Yaz is one of those players that doesn't get as much glory as the big names. I mean, he's in the Hall of Fame and all, so it's not like he's a nobody. But ask any 12-year old who Babe Ruth is, and they'll know at least the basics. Mention Yaztrzemski and you'll get a blank stare. Hell, I have to double-check my spelling of his name each time I type it!

In the 60s he was huge, though, and he did so much for the Sox. This article gives a lot of the good details. I especially like what Jerry Remy said about him: "I don't think he became the most talented of the Hall of Famers, but no one outworked him. Up until the day he retired, he wanted to be the best. ... He spent hours and hours and hours hitting."

Yaz, we're all pulling for you. I’ve thought about that before, but I didn’t realize the actual numbers.

The research shows:
When a team plays at home, they win 54% of those games.
When a team travels west, they win 56% of those games.
When a team travels east, they win just 37% of those games. He recently hit his 500th homerun and already he’s donating his batting helmet and lineup card from that game.

I also love that he made a deal with the fan who caught the ball from the homer. The fan would keep it overnight to enjoy, and then give it back to Manny the next day. (Let’s hear it for the honorable fan, too!) But Manny doesn’t want the ball back for himself. He wants to auction it off for a charity.

Then again, maybe it’s sad that this kind of behavior makes news at all. My friend gets these great Boston Bruins hockey tickets pretty often, so we checked them out. I'm not nearly as into hockey as baseball, but it's still a good time. I think it's funny that the Bruins finished the season exactly in the middle of the NHL standings. 15th out of 30. It’s a month until the pitchers and catchers have to report to spring training in Fort Myers, and already all the tickets are sold out for four of the Grapefruit League games.

Three of the sellouts are against National League teams, and it is kind of fun to see some different players in action. The Philadelphia Phillies, the New York Mets, or the Cincinnati Reds – I’d probably go with the Mets game myself. But I have to admit that the game I’d most want to turn to a ticket broker to see would be the March 12th meetup with our old frienemies, the New York Yankees.

Oh, well, desperate as I am for the baseball season to get underway again, it’s a lot more realistic to think about baseball tickets here in town at Fenway Park. I don't get to Fenway Park nearly as often as I'd like, so I was looking forward to it.

Then a friend told me he was getting married on 10/1, so I gave the tickets to my cousin. My cousin's daughter had some important kid event to attend, so she passed the tickets on to a co-worker. My friend's wedding got postponed (long dramatic story), so I was a little bummed that I was missing the game for nothing. But then, "luckily" the co-worker got in a car accident yesterday. I know, I know...that's horrible of me. But I promise he's completely fine, and it was just a fender bender. He's just too busy calling his insurance company, etc. to go to the game. So the tickets are mine again.

So where am I now? Sitting in a bar, waiting for the rain to end and the game to start (rain delay), writing about the Boston Red Sox instead of watching them. Maybe someone's trying to tell me I shouldn't be at this game. :)

Red Sox game marks Froemming's 5000th

Congratulations to Bruce Froemming for his ongoing contribution to pro sports: Wednesday night the Boston Red Sox – Detroit Tigers game at Fenway Park marked Froemming’s 5000th game as an umpire for Major League Baseball! His 36 MLB seasons have included well over 100 postseason games, among those five World Series. His calls have not always earned the devotion of fans, as when his “Ball four” ended Chicago Cubs’ Milt Pappas’s perfect game one strike shy of the record books. But what he has earned is respect. And Wednesday night, a standing ovation.

By the way, that game went to the Red Sox, 6-4.

Red Sox Keeping the Yankees out of Reach

Curt Schilling had a milestone this week pitching seven innings and receiving his 200th career win. I hope to see the WBC back next year because it is a grand opportunity to forge relationships with other countries who love baseball as much as we do in America.

Music and Spring Training

Well, I am really excited about training camp and the Boston Red Sox spring schedule. I’ve been listening to some great music lately. It’s an album I’ve had for years but just decided to take it out again and give it some play in the car and at home. The album is Sister Sweetly by Big Head Todd and the Monsters. They sound different from many of the jam bands but are in that modern rock blues category that hosts Dave Matthews and Phish. Give them a listen. I suggest the song Broken Hearted Savior.

Johnny Damon's Valentine

Well, Rex Sox fans, do you still feel like Johnny Damon has jilted us? That is exactly what Manny Ramirez is doing. On Friday night, Ramirez was hit by a pitch in the 10th inning with the bases loaded to force in the winning run, and Saturday night he hit the game winning home run, to push the Red Sox ahead of the Oakland A’s 2-1. The Red Sox hitting has been struggling, in the past 7 games they have only scored 21 runs, not the kind of run support a pitcher likes to have. But the pitching has been strong allowing the Red Sox to stay in front in the AL East. “We just want to be one run better, whether it's 11-10 or 2-1,” Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. Well that’s all well and good, but I think us Red Sox fans would like to go one night without a potential heart attack. The New York Yankees also won Saturday night,1-0, against the Toronto Blue Jays.

The $300,000 Loogie

On Monday the word came down. David Wells (11-6, 4.44 ERA) will be suspended for six games because of the incident on July 2, in a game against the Toronto Blue Jays, where Wells pushed and spit at an umpire. Wells had no shortage of words about his suspension saying,

“I don't know what the point was even having a hearing…They said I clearly bumped him and sprayed him with spit. In the last four games, the Red Sox have come out on top each time. The Sox destroyed the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in their most recent series winning out every game.

Boston is now going against the Toronto Blue Jays to take the lead in their division. The 35-year old closer for the Yankees, Rivera let 5 runs go to the Red Sox with only 3 outs to go. Rivera was very upset with his play and was practically booed out of Yankee Stadium.

The Sox were playing without general manager Terry Francona, who has been ailing with chest pains. Schilling is slated to pitch Saturday in an intrasquad minor league game in Fort Myers. After that, he'll have four days' rest before he pitches in Triple-A Pawtucket's season opener April 7 in Indianapolis.

Schilling said he intends to go on a normal schedule starting Saturday, and that he thinks he needs two starts before making his first Red Sox start. That means Schilling would be ready to pitch for Boston on April 12; however, April 12, the day after the home opener against the Yankees, is an off day. That would put Schilling in line to pitch April 13 against the Yankees, although he won't get into specifics.

"It's been a lot easier to take it one at a time rather than look ahead, because of the little things," he said. In efforts to have a comeback game, Schilling threw pitches for a Minor League game. This marked his first competitive outing in Spring Training. Also, it’s good to see Schilling on the field instead of at a steroid hearing.

After the game, Schilling felt very positive about his play and his recovered right ankle. He played three innings in the game where he only allowed for one homer. Playing very well, manager Terry Francona decided that he probably still needed to stay out another few weeks into the season. Disappointed but not put out, Schilling continues to work up his ankle as much as he can.

"I've known that for a while. From the timetables it does not appear that Schilling will be able to completely recover before opening day. Schilling, the Red Sox, and the doctors are keeping close tabs to see if this might change.

"You don't wrap up a season [on] Opening Day. As much as that is a great thing for the fans and for baseball and it's a great thing for Curt to go against his old teammate, the important thing for us is that Curt Schilling is healthy. We need him healthy and he knows that. He knows it's more important to make his next 30 starts in a row from that time than having to make one and sit out for two months."
- Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek

Sox manager Terry Francona is still leaving the opening-game slot vacant and will not fill it until he hears word from Schilling. He has an average cutter and slider, and he is homer-prone. Still, he was surprisingly sharp dealing with inherited runners in 2004 and earned a re-signing. He's on the bullpen bubble this year and must fight off younger usurpers. A back strain put him on the shelf late in the season. He had a solid winter league campaign to the club's delight. . . .

RHP Kevin Correia needs to improve his location and in-the-clutch aggressiveness to clinch a relief role after converting from a starter's role midway in 2004. Only 24, Correia must focus on consistency and may be a year or so away from being a steady big leaguer.

HOT PROSPECT: 3B Nate Schierholtz made a bold Class A statement with Hagerstown and San Jose last year, and he showed impressive power worthy of South Atlantic League All-Star honors. The lefthanded batter still needs seasoning at higher levels -- how he'll fare against big league pitching is unknown -- but he'll be part of the farm boy contingent in Scottsdale this spring and compete in split-squad or "B" games. The Giants' top infield prospect sports quick feet, a strong arm and home run potential.

Change is Good, Hopefully…

It was time for Pedro Martinez to move on. So, is this a bad thing? Well, initially it worried me a little bit. Not only are the Sox losing a future Hall of Famer, but this is the first season after going all the way the previous year. Much of the pressure during the series fell on the shoulders of Martinez and he took it without flinching. Martinez is moving over to the Mets and has signed a four year contract for $53 million.

G.M. Theo Epstein doesn’t seem too worried. In place of Martinez, Epstein has brought in a few powerful arms. David Wells, Matt Clement, and Wade Miller have been signed on to the Red Sox. Each of these pitchers will bring about a new spice to the team. Matt Clement has been developing and, under the wing Curt Schilling and Jason Varitek, will help the Red Sox stay an extreme force in the coming year.

From World Series to Global Domination

As you all know, the Boston Red Sox took the victory in the last World Series. It was an unbelievable series to watch, as the underdog took the victory first out of the hands of the Yankees and then from the Cards. I personally think it would have been a better game to see if the Astros and Sox went head to head, but you can’t always get what you want… damn Cardinals!!!

With their win, the Red Sox are only looking at improvement to make sure that their team stays a powerhouse. How do you do it? Go to Japan. The Red Sox have recently signed a deal with Japanese pitcher Denny Tomori for Minor League play. I think it's special. It shows the loyalty of the club. I feel lucky to be in this position. Not a lot of guys get that opportunity, and I've had the luck on my side to be able to stay here. But before jumping at that chance, Clement carefully explored his alternatives, thoroughly exploring suitors that also included the Angels, Dodgers, Diamondbacks, White Sox, Indians and Blue Jays.

By the time his detailed research project was complete, Clement learned what he'd suspected all along: The Red Sox were ideal, and that's where he wound up, signing a three-year contract worth approximately $25 million.

The decision was made on Friday, and came to fruition Tuesday, when Clement went to Boston and passed his physical. The Red Sox announced the move on Wednesday.

hot stove 2004
Complete coverage >

He will join fellow newcomer David Wells in a rotation that will also include Curt Schilling, Tim Wakefield and Bronson Arroyo.

And that quintet could have company. According to ESPN.com, the Red Sox signed right-hander Wade Miller -- who was non-tendered by the Astros on Monday -- to a one-year deal worth $1.5 million and incentives that could bring the total value of the contract to $4.5 million.

"I'm so excited," said Clement in a conference call. "How many pitchers get the chance to pitch at Wrigley field for three years, and now, get to pitch at Fenway Park for three years, especially after a World Series. I'm just unbelievably excited to come to Fenway Park and to be a pitcher for the Red Sox."

Clement's years with the Cubs helped him appreciate the accomplishments of the 2004 Red Sox even more. He knows what it's like to be pitching on a team that has the burden of trying to end generations of championship futility.

"Coming from the Cubs and seeing what they accomplished, not just winning the World Series, but having the scrutiny on them, having the supposed curse on them, the whole bit, being able to overcome something like that, that's something I want to be a part of, people who are all about that," said Clement. "Obviously location was another thing for me. Pittsburgh isn't a far flight from Boston, not even that bad of a drive."

There's also the matter of catcher Jason Varitek, the free agent the Red Sox are working overtime in hopes of retaining.

"I heard more rave reviews about [Varitek] from different people then I ever had in the past about anybody," Clement said. "As a pitcher, when I watch games, I watch how the catcher performs and think to myself, man, 'I'd love to throw to this guy'. I remember saying that many a time, both about Varitek and [Doug] Mirabelli and that's something I'm very excited about."

The Red Sox are excited about Clement's upside. His stuff is nasty, evidenced by opponents hitting a meager .229 against him last season.

The 30-year-old Clement is a hard thrower with sinking action on his fastball, and a top-notch slider. He has struggled at times to find the strike zone, which is probably the main thing that has prevented him from fully reaching his potential.

Pitching for the Cubs in 2004, Clement went 9-13 with a 3.68 ERA. He stuck out 191 batters over 181 innings.

"I'm a groundball pitcher," said Clement. "I use my slider as my effective out pitch. I'm just going to attack the hitters aggressively as best I can."

In his career, Clement has pitched for the Padres (1998-2000), Marlins (2001) and Cubs (2002-'04), going 69-75 with a 4.34 ERA. The Red Sox look at him as a pitcher who is ready to enter his prime.

Clement wasn't about to dispute that notion.

"If you ever feel like you're a finished pitching product, you aren't going to get what you need out of yourself," said Clement. "I've always been the type of person that just, I don't care how great a season it would be for me, I'm always going to think there's more I can get out of myself."

While trying to make up his mind, Clement spoke with Red Sox third baseman Bill Mueller, his former teammate in Chicago. After Mueller assured him he could thrive in Boston, Clement talked to a number of impartial baseball people, including Greg Maddux, Mark Grace, Kerry Wood and Trevor Hoffman. Nobody could convince him that the Red Sox weren't the answer to what he was looking for.

"The one thing they constantly sold me on was the fact that it's going to be a good team," said Clement. "You're going to be on a good team for three years."

No fourth year for Pedro

By Mike Petraglia / Special to MLB.com

The Red Sox continue to plan for all possibilities as the free agent market takes shape.

In an apparent effort to make their bargaining stance to Pedro Martinez clear, the Boston Globe reported Wednesday that the team will not guarantee the ace free agent right-hander a fourth year in contract negotiations and will not challenge a reported three-year deal from the Mets if he decides to accept the offer to move to the National League.

Various reports indicate the Red Sox have offered Martinez a two-year, $25.5 million proposal, with a third-year vesting option included at an estimated $13 million. The Mets have reportedly offered the three-time Cy Young Award winner three guaranteed years at $38 million, with a fourth-year option.

Elsewhere, the team has not commented on a Providence Journal report Wednesday that they have explored a trade with Arizona for Randy Johnson. The paper reported that they have had "numerous" discussions with the Diamondbacks, who would demand right-hander Bronson Arroyo along with top pitching prospect Jon Lester and likely another prospect.

Johnson, who is due to make an estimated $16.5 million in 2005, would have to agree to any deal because of the no-trade clause in his current contract.

If the club is talking to the Johnson camp, it would be in addition to the club's pursuit of free agents Carl Pavano, Brad Radke and Matt Clement as possible moves to solidify its rotation for 2005.

Martinez and Derek Lowe are Boston's two free agent starting pitchers on the market while the team continues to consider what to do with free agents Jason Varitek and Orlando Cabrera. All four could be offered arbitration if the team chooses to do so by next week's deadline.

There Are No Accidents

It's not a surprise to me the Red Sox are World Champions. Boston was due. The Red "hot" Sox made MLB history when the came back from three games to beat the Yankees four strait games in a row.

The amazing thing about that is... It has never been done before.

In fact, not only did they when 4 strait, after dropping the first three in the ALCS, but Boston also went on to win another 4 strait against the St. Loius Cardinals to take a complete sweep of the World Series.

That is impressive considering that the Cardinals had the best regular season record(105-57)and it is really impressive that Boston also set another record in post-season play with 8 strait wins.

I hate to be pun-ny but I was told along time ago that everyone is dealt a hand of cards, some are better than others, but what matters is how you play them. The St. Loius Cards where just out played.

On Any Given Day

Anyone who was watching game 6 of the 2005 ALCS last night saw history in the making. Last night viewers across America witness a comeback thought to be improbable. Well, apparently the Curt Schilling thought other wise.

Schilling threw on a bad ankle, with special surgery that was performed by team doctors to tighten the dislocated tendon he suffered in Game 1.

The Red Sox are red hot again. They won 3 strait games against the Yankees after dropping the first three. This has never been done in MLB history. If the Sox keep up tonight, another moment in history will be set in stone for the first team to come back and win a 7 game series after losing the first 3.

An on any given day, Schilling showed us he is always ready to buckle down and pitch. As the weather and environment that surrounded him had no effect during his 7 inning outing with only one run earned and walks.

Time to go the promise land...

The Rivalry That Never Rests

From MLB.com, by Mike Bauman

NEW YORK -- Excitement about this postseason series has been building for some time -- since roughly 1920, as it turns out.

That was when, of course, the Boston Red Sox sold Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees. No, I don't believe in "the Curse of the Bambino," or any of that sort of superstitious rot. I just believe that there are some mistakes in personnel moves from which it takes a considerable amount of time to recover.

True, 84 years seems a bit extreme. You figure that even for a personnel mistake as large as moving The Babe, the Red Sox could have bounced back in maybe a half-century or so. But they haven't, which is why the history between these two teams is a weight that must be carried by the citizens of Red Sox Nation. With each passing season in which the Red Sox do not ultimately triumph over the Yankees, the historical baggage only becomes heavier.

The rivalry between these two clubs never rests. Not content with playing each other 26 times last season, the clubs turned their competition into a year-round event. The Red Sox took over the Thanksgiving headlines with their successful courtship of Curt Schilling. The Yankees closed the Valentine season by sending one to themselves with the acquisition of Alex Rodriguez. Given the fact that the Red Sox had been on the doorstep of an A-Rod acquisition themselves, only to be nixed by the players' union, this Yankee move was like two hits in one, a blunt object and a sharp stick.

Even those people without a specific rooting interest in either team -- and these people do exist, I have personally spoken with four of them -- acknowledge the importance of these proceedings. Everybody understands the history. Everybody understands the triumph (Yankees). Everybody understands, even if they do not personally suffer the angst (Red Sox).

So this is big and, somehow, getting bigger. It is so big that it is probably illegal in some states, although apparently not New York and Massachusetts. It is so big that players, managers and coaches do not even try to sell the notion that a postseason game must be approached on some level as "just another game." With the Red Sox and the Yankees, it isn't even worth trying to trot out that concept. Everybody knows better...

Vintage Pedro Puts on Display

By Buster Olney, ESPN The Magazine

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The paternity test results came back Wednesday and contrary to Pedro Martinez's public expressions of doubt, he is still a daddy. Of the Anaheim Angels, at least -- with more testing likely to be completed in October.

Martinez threw seven solid innings against the Angels in Game 2 of the Division Series, Boston beat Anaheim 8-3, and Pedro eased the concerns that he raised -- mostly within himself, it seemed -- with his poor finish to the regular season. Now the Red Sox go back to Boston needing only one victory to close out the Angels and knowing that should they advance, Martinez has regained most of his greatness...

He had lost his last four starts, twice against the Devil Rays and twice against the Yankees, and along the way he had opened a vein from his psyche and spilled out his gravest professional anxiety. That was when Martinez said he might someday call the Yankees his daddies -- a moment, he said Wednesday, when he wished everyone would have fallen asleep and never heard his words...

Martinez sometimes has trouble getting loose in cold weather, as if he needs to be defrosted for a few innings before he can cut loose. But the day here was warm and the evening pleasant and the sweat crawled down Martinez's cheekbones in the first inning, fueled by the extra adrenalin he felt and was counting on. For Pedro, that's better than blowing on your hand and trying to warm your fingers in the Fenway cold.

Home plate umpire Jerry Meals had a tight strike zone, rarely calling anything off the edges of the plate, and the Angels -- from pitcher Bartolo Colon to Scioscia -- grew increasingly irate.

Martinez, however, was comfortable throughout, glancing in at Meals but never obsessing. There was a sense even before the game, Varitek said, that he was going to pitch well, that he was going to be Pedro. "He gave everything he had to do what he did," said Terry Francona, the Boston manager...

Martinez allowed only one run in the first four innings, but after hitting Darin Erstad with a pitch to load the bases in the fifth, Martinez surrendered a two-run single to Vladimir Guerrero. Varitek tied the score with a two-run homer in the sixth, however, and Manny Ramirez's sacrifice fly in the seventh gave Boston a 4-3 edge. Martinez came out for the bottom of the seventh, still throwing hard, hitting the targets in the strike zone that had eluded him in September.

Martinez's pitch count climbed over 100, during David Eckstein's prolonged at-bat. Eckstein fouled off pitch after pitch. Martinez seemed unbothered by the extra work, gnawing on gum so steadily that he didn't even slow his gums while taking signs, as he usually does...

Go Red Sox!

Red "Hot" Sox

It would be nice if the playoffs started now. Our Red Sox are ready to take on anybody in their path to the pennant. No one should argue that.

It was last night, the Sox had five runs in the top of the sixth, the Sox broke a 2-2 tie. They soon tacked on another six in the seventh, going to a 13-2 victory over the Mariners. The Red "hot" Sox (27-6 since Aug. 7) beat back their American League East deficit back to 2 1/2 games holding five-games over Anaheim in the Wild Card standings.

Unlike Thursday's series opener, the Sox had more than enough big sticks in the line up. Ramirez led off the fourth with a solo shot to left. It was Ramirez's 150th homer as a Red Sox, which lead him to surpassed Reggie Smith for 14th on the club's all-time list.

Sox to Face Jays

From MLB.com:

The Red Sox begin a three-game series at SkyDome with all kinds of momentum. First, the team trotted out Tim Wakefield on Monday, and he four-hit the Rays en route to a 6-3 victory. Enter Curt Schilling today, who has been even more dominant.

The right-hander is tied for third in the American League in wins and could be moving higher with a few more chances against the Devil Rays. One run and 10 hits in 14 1/3 innings is all Schilling has allowed Tampa Bay in a pair of victories.

Not only did Wakefield move to 10-1 lifetime against the Rays, but he did it in fine fashion on his 38th birthday. The knuckleballer yielded three runs off four hits and earned two marks of distinction. He pitched in his 2,000 inning -- the 19th active hurler to reach that plateau -- in the fifth and the start pushed him past Luis Tiant on Boston's all-time charts. Roger Clemens and Cy Young are the only two ahead of him.

After two straight losses, Boston needed a victory. The team had fallen 9 1/2 games back of the Yankees, its worst deficit of the season. With New York and most of the league off Monday, Boston picked up a half a game and can look forward to 13 more games against Tampa Bay, which is 1-6 against the Red Sox this season.

Hopefully all those games against Tampa Bay will help us boost our record a bit!

GO SOX!!!

2-1 Over Yankees

The Sox took home a 2-1 Series over the weekend against the Yankees - homers everywhere! Thanks to the break, he's well-rested and hopefully ready to go.

In other news, we split the series in Anaheim to put us at 50-40, still trailing the %#!@ Yankees. How will baseball ever recover from Steinbrenner and a team built to win on dough rather than heart?! With two outs, Jason Giambi reached on a Jeff Kent error, and after Derek Jeter singled to left, game MVP Alfonso Soriano cleared the bases with a first-pitch homer to left field that gave the AL a six-run advantage.

Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz both represented us well at the All-Stars, each with his own homer.
