A crushing loss to the Rays. I know I look pretty hang-dog right now, but check out the expressions on these guys.

Yaz

Carl Yaztrzemski went from a Triple Crown to a triple bypass this week. I'm guessing the former was a lot more fun.

Yaz is one of those players that doesn't get as much glory as the big names. I mean, he's in the Hall of Fame and all, so it's not like he's a nobody. But ask any 12-year old who Babe Ruth is, and they'll know at least the basics. Mention Yaztrzemski and you'll get a blank stare. Hell, I have to double-check my spelling of his name each time I type it!

In the 60s he was huge, though, and he did so much for the Sox. This article gives a lot of the good details. I especially like what Jerry Remy said about him: "I don't think he became the most talented of the Hall of Famers, but no one outworked him. Up until the day he retired, he wanted to be the best. ... He spent hours and hours and hours hitting."

Yaz, we're all pulling for you. Have a speedy and complete recovery!

I (Don't) Love New York

Like most Red Sox fans, I'm not particularly wild about spending time in New York, let alone Yankee Stadium. So I'm torn. Should I buy allstar game tickets or not? What am I saying, of course I will. But I won't enjoy it. That'll be my compromise.

Love the East Coast!

I was scanning Red Sox articles on MLB.com (I mean, um, working hard at my office) and I came across one about jet lag affecting players. I’ve thought about that before, but I didn’t realize the actual numbers.

The research shows:
When a team plays at home, they win 54% of those games.
When a team travels west, they win 56% of those games.
When a team travels east, they win just 37% of those games. Ouch.

Just another reason to love Boston, folks! You don’t get much more east than that!

Way to Go, Celtics!

As if we didn't have enough here in Boston to brag about...now how am I supposed to act humble? It's tough to be me.

Manny's My Man

It’s sad that steroid use gets so much more media attention than someone like Manny Ramirez. He recently hit his 500th homerun and already he’s donating his batting helmet and lineup card from that game.

I also love that he made a deal with the fan who caught the ball from the homer. The fan would keep it overnight to enjoy, and then give it back to Manny the next day. (Let’s hear it for the honorable fan, too!) But Manny doesn’t want the ball back for himself. He wants to auction it off for a charity.

Then again, maybe it’s sad that this kind of behavior makes news at all. Wouldn’t it be great if this was so commonplace among athletes that it wasn’t even worth mentioning?

Not a Fanatic

Sometimes I feel like a pretty big Red Sox fan. But then I see that you can buy a ring tone of the audio call of the final out for the recent Royals game. For your cell phone. So you can hear it every time anyone calls.

And I know that there are people out there who are buying that and hearing it over and over. And then I know, I am not that hardcore. I mean, it was a great game and all, but…really? Your ring tone?

It’s cool, though. The world needs all kinds of people.
